Chapter Eight

The Elfin City of White Waters

Lady Aylen swam through the water faster than she realized without the least bit of effort. Her eyes could see for many miles all around. Her hands were not just fully webbed, but her fingers had elongated to create a greater width.

A giant gulper fish four times her size followed. The larger lower half of its mouth was a giant pouch. All around them was a school of black-and-yellow frog-headed fish. Whenever she glanced black at them, they smiled at her with their human mouths. She rolled her eyes.

Only once did they see a vessel. A city ship passed right above them, but the gulper spewed out a dark-bluish cloud so they could not be seen.

After near two hours of swimming, the gulper fish grew tentacles as its size increased again. Lady Aylen grabbed a tentacle, and so did all the phookas with their new frog-like arms. The gulper fish octopus sped away with them holding on. Lady Aylen could no longer see around her. They were enveloped in the creature’s wake.

When the dog in its gulper octopus form stopped, Lady Aylen let go of its tentacle and floated upward. She could see the ocean city in the distance and the many water elf warriors guarding the underwater entrances. The water elves saw them.

The castle city floated on the ocean surface with a network of ports. Every manner of ship was docked. The castle stood nearly seventy feet, and there was a smaller network of ports for flying ships above.

The grounds outside the main entrance were vast enough for a large ground army but were empty except for the dozens of warriors who had them surrounded with scimitars, crossbows, and tridents. All were in elfin armor with ornate helmets, both male and female elves, some with skin tones similar to Lady Aylen but others with bluish skin.

Lady Aylen studied them. Dr’amal, Ursi, the mole-looking fae, Nori, and Otari of the selkie clan were at her sides. Traveler and his dog stood behind them. The rambunctious phookas were not allowed on the docks. Hundreds of them floated in the water, laughing in the form of black-and-yellow frog-headed fish as another group of elfin warriors watched them closely.

The receiving contingent marched from the main gate. The lead elfess had a sour face at the sight of them. Her helmet had a fish’s fin, and she wore a flowing vest over her armor. Two tall elfin males followed her on either side, two cloaked females behind them, then a full contingent of elfin warriors.

Lady Aylen stepped forward and extended a parchment to the lead elfess. She looked at one of the cloaked females, who nodded. The lead elfess took the parchment and read it.

“Queen Geneva and Oluania. You swam here from Kraken’s Wake?”

“We did,” Lady Aylen replied.

“Even I am not that brave, or foolish.” The elfess handed the princess back the parchment. “I am Queen Firi and this is the elfin kingdom of White Waters.”

“Thank you, queen. I am Lady Aylen.
